The Château of Grignan

The Château of Grignan sits proudly on its rocky promontory and, like a king on his throne,  dominates the mountains and plains. In 845 Grignan was incorporated into the kingdom of Provence and belonged to the Monteil family until the 13th century.
The Adhémars, lords of Grignan, reigned supreme until the French Revolution. In the 15th century, they transformed the fortified castle into a majestic Renaissance residence, making improvements, modernizing and embellishing. At the same time, the Saint-Sauveur collegiate church, the immense terraces with their panoramic views and the Renaissance façade were built.

The Count François de Grignan, the Marquise de Sévigné's son-in-law, made some important changes to the entrance hall, the main courtyard and the Prelates' wing.
Over the centuries, the medieval fortress with its massive and mighty air metamorphosed into a pleasurable residence of parties and plays.
The château of Grignan started gaining renown in the 17th century with Madame de Sévigné's many visits. She and her daughter, the Marquise Marguerite de Sévigné, engaged in long correspondence,   the many letters of which make up a masterpiece of French literature.
The château's reputation became literary.
Madame de Sévigné died at the château on February 17, 1696. Her tomb lies in the collegiate church.
The château of Grignan was greatly damaged during the French Revolution. The successive owners undertook restoration work, up until the town hall acquired the château in 1979 and had it listed as a historic monument in 1993.
Today, a tour of the château lets you discover the beauty of the apartments, the decoration, furnishings and artworks and the immense reception rooms that reveal the Art de Vivre of our ancestors.
