THE NEXT BIG SAINT VALENTINE'S DAY FESTIVAL IN ROQUEMAURE WILL TAKE PLACE IN FEBRUARY 2019. The big Saint Valentine's Day celebration in Roquemaure, with the traditional crafts market, the parades in the village streets, the stands, etc, now only takes place every 2 years. (A less elaborate programme is offered in even-numbered years.)
For a century and a half, Roquemaure has been in love with Saint Valentine, patron saint of Lovers.
Every year, on the Saturday and Sunday closest to February 14th, Roquemaure becomes the City of Love Stories".
Roquemaure takes on the appearance it had in the 19th century, to commemorate the arrival of the relics of Saint Valentine in 1868 with more than 800 people in costumes, horse-drawn carts and horsemen, the shops and post office decorated like in olden days, the Lovers' fountain, the old trades, the music kiosk and a merry-go-round of wooden horses.
For the occasion, the streets are renamed after the most famous lovers out of French literature.
To the sound of the oboes and bagpipes, the tambourines and flutes, folklore groups, along with street performers, jugglers and acrobats, liven up the old village.
