Rites and arts of the forest

The Mbuti are pygmies from the Ituri region in north-eastern Congo. These hunter-gatherers live in symbiosis with the equatorial forest, attuning themselves to its spirits and syncopated rhythms. A large part of their time is devoted to leisure, artistic and philosophical questions, through discussions and learning complex traditions.

Among these traditions, the loincloths presented in this exhibition, used during ritual ceremonies, are made from the liber - the inner part of the bark of the ficus latex trees.
